Capsulated Systems, Inc is proud of our reputation in the microencapsulation industry, and we stand by our more than three decades of experience in the field. Our headquarters, industrial encapsulation labs, pilot plant (that can make batches of ten pounds each), and manufacturing plant (computerized production) (see above) are located in Miamisburg, OH. The plant has an annual capacity of one million pounds of dry capsules and five million pounds of capsules in slurry form. This capacity can easily be quadrupled in the same facility with minimal additional equipment. In addition, CSI maintains a production facility in Springfield, OH that has an annual capacity of 125,000 pounds of dry capsules.

In addition, CSI's pharmaceutical research lab is located in Ithaca, NY in the Cornell Business and Technology Park. The purpose of this effort, which is totally unrelated to the industrial side in Ohio, is to use our understanding of controlled release techniques and apply them to the pharmaceutical industry. Then the plan is to locate partners who have extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry to develop and market the products under a license from CSI.

PROPRIETARY PRODUCTS
AVCAP and MACAP Macroencapsulation Coating

While working on some projects requiring particularly strong, impermeable capsule walls, scientists at CSI theorized that a version of the wall material might be applied as a macroencapsulation conformal coating. This idea has fostered an extraordinarily successful program, a patent and certification of a resultant conformal coating for electronic circuits(AVCAP) for the Department of Defense Qualified Products List for MIL-I-46058C which permits its use for protection of sensitive and valuable defense electronics equipment.

The macroencapsulation conformal coatings systems developed at CSI meet the challenges of moisture and humidity protection of electronic hardware. CSI's macroencapsulation process uses an organic polymer which wraps itself around the surface to be encapsulated to provide uniform protection from contamination. It is easily applied by dip, brush or spray techniques. Some of it's advantages are:

  • Superior Moisture/Oxygen Resistance
  • Pin-Hole Free Coating
  • Flexibility
  • Repairability
  • Excellent Adhesion
  • Protection of Electromigration
  • Excellent Heat Dissipation
  • Thermal Shock Resistance
  • Transparency (UV Tint Available)
  • Thin Film, 1 -2 mils
  • No Shrinkage
  • No Cracking (no plasticizers)
  • Chemical Resistance
  • Easy, Low-Cost Application
  • Compatibility with Other Coatings for Repair/Rework Purposes(Urethanes and Epoxies)

Additionally, MACAP, a similar product to AVCAP, is being tested as a protective coating for metal structural components (concrete reinforcement bars, bridge and building beams, etc.) Results, thus far, are excellent. MACAP's superior adhesion qualities, pin-hole free coating, moisture/humidity resistance and thermal shock resistance properties exhibit promise that it may be the corrosion inhibition system of the future.

Finally, this polymeric material provides CSI with a unique capability to microencapsulate aqueous based materials heretofore unheard of. Such materials as water/glycerine, sulfuric acid(2% concentration), sodium hydroxide(5% concentration), and pesticides can now be encapsulated and isolated into a free flowing powder using this patented system.

    PHARMACEUTICALS

    Prolonged Release Local Anesthetic

Pain management after surgery often starts with an injection of a local anesthetic as part of surgery.  This, however, provides pain relief for only a matter of hours after surgery for a single injection, even for local anesthetics which are deemed relatively longer lasting.  In many cases, an augmentation agent is believed needed to extend the action of the local anesthetic.  The patient can then be prescribed medications such as hydrocodone, percoset, vicadin, or other opiates or opiate-like materials.  Opiates operate on the central nervous system to manage pain for the next 5-7 days, after which the pain subsides to a level that can be controlled by over-the-counter pain killers such as ibuprophen, acetaminophen, or aspirin.  However, opiates present potential problems with addiction, abuse, adverse reaction, and limiting of patient activity.

A need exists to find better, more efficient pain management approaches, including longer lasting pain relief from local anesthetics which can eliminate or reduce the need for opiate usage and reduce or eliminate side effects.  This is particularly true when there are limits on the volume of anesthetic which can be injected.  Furthermore, a need exists for prolonged local anesthetics that do not require augmentation agents.  Some augmentation agents are condition-specific for particular deceases, such as cancer, or others, such as steroids, are prone to produce side effects.

CSI’s system relied on our knowledge of microencapsulation and time release techniques to develop a composition made of a number of microparticles in which microparticles are made of different chemical backbones to release at different rates over different times. The system is efficient in that it typically has at least 50% loading going up to 80% loading compared to similar systems that max out at 30% loading, This allows for more drug to be released in the least particle volume.
